The Problem.

Governor Corbett has not acted to support the recommendations of his Transportation Funding Advisory Commission.

On February 7, 2012, Governor Corbett delivered his budget address but neglected to provide any specifics regarding the transportation issue, stating only that, "Transportation must be confronted as its own distinct and separate option."

The Impact.

With no legislative action on transportation funding, public transit in Allegheny County is directly and severely impacted.

To date, the legislature and the Governor are at an impasse. The legislature is waiting for the Governor to comment on transportation, despite the introduction of three comprehensive bills by Rep. Frankel and Rep. Hanna (HB2099, HB2101, HB2112), which have received strong bipartisan support.

The Legislature is still waiting, even though transportation funding is the one legislative issue for which there is strong bipartisan support.

The Future.

Without a resolution to the transportation funding crisis by June 30, 2012, Port Authority will raise fares in July and reduce service by 35% in September.

Other impacts on public transit include:

  • 20,000 daily transit riders will lose transit service.
  • 44 routes out of 102 will be eliminated.
  • 400 – 500 Port Authority employees laid off.
  • 1 – 2 bus operating divisions will close.
  • Service reductions on every remaining route.

Act Now.

Let Governor Corbett know that you think the Transportation Funding Advisory Commission that he appointed presented a good plan for addressing the state’s transportation crisis.

Contact your legislator and ask him or her to support HB2099, HB 2101 and, in particular, HB2112 which deals with funding for public transit, NOW!

Action is especially urgent given the 35% cuts the Port Authority will be forced to make in September 2012 if no action is taken by the state.
